The favorite Bodemeister drew the six stall and trainer Bob Baffert was relieved not to be any further on the inner. Baffert has already landed three Kentucky Derbys and feels he has a big chance of number four from that draw.
Baffert’s unfancied second string Liaison starts from the outside of the entire field in 20, but it was the European challenge who got the starting berth that nobody else wanted, number 1. It has proved the death knell for all bar one horse (Ferdinand in ’86) in the last 50 years.
So Aidan O’Brien’s Daddy Long Legs has some severe stats and history to defy. In Daddy Long Legs’ favor is that he has seen this track before, in the Breeders Cup last year, and he is an all American-bred, Irish challenger. He won the UAE Derby in Dubai most recently and he might just be ignored to such an extent that he begins to look a play.
Of the other runners, Hansen got 14 which his handler Mike Maker was happy enough with.Union Rags is in four while Alpha gets the 11 stall.
Everyone is talking about Todd Pletcher’s Gemologist, who has yet to taste defeat and starts from 15. Take Charge Indy, with Calvin Borel seeking a 4th Kentucky Derby, starts from three. It may be a bit too near the rail, but expect Calvin to break slow and grab the rail pitch and then pick them off late.
The owner, trainer, jockey combination that won last year with Animal Kingdom (2011) are represented by the ex-UK Went The Day Well, drawn in what trainer Graham Motion will be hoping is a lucky 13.
