Kentucky Derby Review 2009: 50/1 Bird strike

Mine That Bird came from last to first to land the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in 2009 for a dominating near 7-length shock victory at 50/1.

In a race where the entire field went far too fast, Mine That Bird was tailed off early before flying through stopping horses up the inside for a totally emphatic victory under jockey Calvin Borel.

Borel, who has made the leap from journeyman jockey who was not taken seriously to top-class and sought-after rider, only went around a single horse as he passed the entire field of runners up the inside.

Borel produced the most-amazing ground-saving ride with his extreme hold-up tactics. The 135th Kentucky Derby 2009 will be a video tape that is re-run for years to come whenever the Kentucky Derby is mentioned. If you haven’t seen it then do an online search for it now.

Borel had achieved the same feat with a similar ride on Street Sense two years prior on 2007.
