Kentucky Derby Review & Result 2008

Big Brown defied all the stats to win the 134th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Richard Dutrow’s big-race favorite was the first since 1929 to win from the graveyard stall 20 and he was the first since 1918 to win with less than five previous runs.

Second placed Eight Belles broke down badly on both front legs when pulling up and collapsed on the track Eight Belles had be destroyed, sparking a storm of public criticism. The freak accident could not have happened on a more high-profile day.

In the race itself, the expectation was that Big Brown would go straight into the lead from his outside stall. Instead he was settled in sixth. Bob Black jack set the early fractions and then Cowboy Cal became the front-runner. But Jockey Kent Desormeaux was oozing confidence on Big Brown and he hunted down Cowboy Cal coming into the home straight and it was all over. Big Brown won with consummate ease by just under five lengths.

Big Brown was retaining his unbeaten tag and it will take a good one to stop him. The American Triple Crown of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes is firmly on Big Brown’s agenda.
