Today’s Hutcheson Stakes (Friday, Jan 30 2009) went to another horse making a claim for a Kentucky Derby berth. Capt Candyman Can beat Hello Broadway to land the Grade 2 prize over 7f on the dirt. Trainer Ian Wilkes will be dreaming of Churchill Downs but Capt Candyman Can’s next start is likely to be the one-mile Fountain of Youth Stakes on the 28th of February. Wilkes is a former assistant of Carl Nafzger and he was pleased to see his star settle after racing with the throttle out last time. Jockey Julien Leparoux explained: “He was far too free when trying to make all the running in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November. This time he was more settled and it made all the difference.”
