Lane's End hero Hold Me Back secures Derby berth |
|
A terrible start from the gates failed to stop Hold Me Back passing the entire field to land the Lane's End Stakes and a place in the Kentucky Derby. Generally a 25-1 shot in the betting for Churchill Downs, Hold Me Back was making his seasonal debut under last year's Derby-winning jockey Kent Desormeaux. The favorite, West Side Bernie, disappointed in sixth and has to be considered unlikely to make it into the maximum 20-runner field for the Kentucky Derby. Although Hold Me Back has secured a place in the big one for sure, trainer Bill Mott was considering a tilt at the Blue Grass Stakes first.
