Luck of Kentucky Derby draw deserts Big Brown |
|
May 1, 2008: The luck of the Kentucky Derby draw has deserted the favorite in the betting for Saturday's big race, Big Brown. Richard Dutrow's star was handed gate 20 of the 20-runner field. That is a stall from which no racehorse has managed to land the Kentucky Derby in the last eighty years. It is likely that, even though he has to become the first to do it since 1929 (Clyde Van Dusen), Big Brown will be still be favorite in the Kentucky Derby betting come the off-time. Pyro is in stall number nine and Colonel John, another with a big fancy, can't complain about stall 10. In Big Brown's favor is the fact that he has amazing early pace. he did land the Florida Derby from a similar graveyard stall when in stall twelve of twelve. Richard Dutrow is not bothered about the task in hand. He reckoned it was an advantage to avoid any balking from the outside gate. He was planning a big bet on Big Brown but Dutrow may be wise to halve the size of it now.
